DISCONNECT/SAFETY SWITCH

Disconnect/Safety Switches are switching devices that are usually wall mounted or contained in the main distribution panel.

PURPOSE:

A Disconnect/Safety Switch is a manual switch housed in a metal enclosure that is used to disconnect the power supply to a piece of equipment. There are both fused and non-fused disconnect switches.

TYPICAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE TASKS:

Typical Energised Maintenance Tasks:

  • Visual Inspection
  • Inspect Switch Blades for Corrosion
  • Perform Infrared Thermography
  • Clean Exterior of Unit
  • Note National (Or Other Appropriate) Electrical Safety Code Violations/Hazardous Conditions

Recommended Frequency:

No less than annual for all tasks.

Typical De-Energised Maintenance Tasks:

  • Inspect Arc Shields
  • Inspect Fuse Holders (Fused Disconnect)
  • Record Fuse Ratings
  • Assure All Connections are Tightened to Proper Torque or Perform Contact Resistance Test
  • Clean Interior of Unit

Recommended Frequency:

No less than once every three years for all tasks (more frequent for older facilities).
