DISTRIBUTION PANEL: FUNCTION & MAINTENANCE

Distribution Panels are typically large panels or assembly of panels installed as part of the main entrance switchgear or installed separately through a building. Distribution panels are > 400 amps.

PURPOSE:

The distribution panel distributes power throughout the building, supplying power to motor starters, branch circuit breaker panels and other control devices.

TYPICAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE TASKS:

Typical Energised Maintenance Tasks:

  • Perform Visual Inspection of Interior
  • Note National (Or Other Appropriate) Electrical Safety Code Violations/Hazardous Conditions.
  • Check for Proper Grounding
  • Perform Ultrasonic Testing
  • Perform Infrared Thermography
  • Check, Record and Compare Voltage
  • Check, Record and Compare Current
  • Check, Record and Compare Harmonic Current
  • Check, Record and Compare Power Factor
  • Clean Exterior of Unit

Recommended Frequency:

Annually or as required by application and/or condition of equipment.

Typical De-Energised Maintenance Tasks:

  • Visual Inspection of Interior
  • Tighten Fuse Holders
  • Assure all Bus Bar Connections are Torqued to Proper Specification or Perform Contact Resistance Test
  • Clean Bus Bars and Insulators
  • Perform Insulation Resistance Tests

Recommended Frequency:

No less than once every three years for all tasks (more frequent for older facilities).
