COMBINATION MOTOR STARTER

Combination Motor Starters are devices that contain a disconnect switch in addition to a motor starter, and are usually located near the piece of equipment that it is operating.

PURPOSE:

The Combination Motor Starter is an electric device that usually contains overload protection. It is used to start motors either manually (via a manual switch) or automatically (via a control circuit).

TYPICAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE TASKS:

Energized Maintenance Tasks:

  • Visual Inspection
  • Perform Ultrasonic Test
  • Perform Infrared Thermography
  • Check, Record and Compare Voltage (Line Side)
  • Check, Record and Compare Current (Line Side)
  • Note National (Or Other Appropriate) Electrical Safety Code Violations/Hazardous Conditions

Recommended Frequency:

    No less than annual for all tasks.

    Typical De-Energized Maintenance Tasks:

    • Inspect Contact Surfaces
    • Record Overload Sizes
    • Inspect Arc Shields
    • Clean Interior of Unit

    Recommended Frequency:

    No less than once every three years for all tasks (more frequent for older facilities).
